The Medical Faculty Mannheim of the University Heidelberg is searching for the Immunomodulation laboratory of Professor Michael Boettcher, Department of Pediatric Surgery, a

PhD Student Immunology (m/f/d)

for three years starting from October 2021. Funding by the DFG.

The project is positioned at the interface between immunology and pediatric surgery. Our lab investigates the interplay between immune cells and various disease including cancer and inflammation in vivo. Our aim is to contribute to the understanding of the mechanism that control immunity (especially neutrophils) and to identify novel targets for cancer immunotherapy (especially CAR t-cells). Our main project will center around neutrophils, organoids and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).

The scope of duties includes:

  • Hands-on experience and publication record in immunology (especially neutrophils)
  • Experience in immunostaining of human and mouse samples
  • Experimental models of inflammation to study molecular mechanisms of leukocyte activation and recruitment (especially neutrophils extracellular traps)
  • Ideally, the candidate should have expertise in breeding and genotyping of mice, a range of methodological approaches such as ELISA, RNA-sequencing, flow cytometry

Qualification profile:

  • M.Sc. or equivalent degree in natural sciences or life sciences
  • Strong interest in immunology and / or molecular biology
  • Experience in experimental animal models and imaging techniques
  • Experience in immunological techniques and molecular biology
  • Excellent team spirit, presentation, scientific writing and communication skills
  • Access to the university library and other university facilities (e.g. university sports)
